Wisconsin Court System - Circuit courts
Circuit courts have original jurisdiction in all civil and criminal matters within the state, including probate, juvenile, and traffic matters, as well as civil and criminal jury trials. Currently, there are 253 circuit court judges in Wisconsin. The circuit courts are divided into branches with at least one branch in every county, with the exception of six counties that are paired off and share judges.

April 21, 2022 - Chief Information Officer (CIO) Jean Bousquet has announced plans to retire, after nearly 30 years with the Wisconsin court system. Bousquet joined the courts as a court analyst in 1993. She became CCAP (Consolidated Court Automation Programs) director in 1998 and has served as CIO since 2001.

Wisconsin Circuit Court Access (WCCA) Wisconsin’s Open Record Act was passed in 1981. As per this law, the public has the right to collect or view public records unless forbidden by the law in exceptional cases. Thus, a public website called WCCA or Wisconsin Circuit Court Access was created for the general public.

On the State level, the lowest Wisconsin court is a Municipal Court. The next level of the Wisconsin court system is the Wisconsin Circuit Court System. There are ten judicial administrative districts of these Wisconsin courts. There is an intermediate appellate Wisconsin court, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. The Appeals Court is broken into four districts. At the top of the Wisconsin Court System is the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
